China has announced its full support for Pakistan as tensions intensify between India and Pakistan following the deadly Pahalgam incident in Indian-administered Kashmir.
In a statement, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi expressed solidarity with Pakistan, affirming that Beijing fully understood Pakistan’s “legitimate security concerns” and supported its efforts to safeguard sovereignty and national security interests.
Wang also called for a fair and timely investigation into the attack and urged both India and Pakistan to exercise restraint, engage in dialogue, and work towards de-escalation and regional stability.
The diplomatic backing comes amid a sharp escalation in South Asia. Last week, Pakistan’s National Security Committee (NSC) decided to give India a “fitting response” and take its concerns to international forums. The move followed India’s announcement of key retaliatory measures, including the revocation of the Indus Waters Treaty, the downgrading of diplomatic relations, and the closure of the Attari passage.
In its meeting, the NSC rejected all Indian allegations against Pakistan related to the Pahalgam attack and approved recommendations from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to respond strongly to what it termed India’s “diplomatic and water aggression.”
The NSC also decided to immediately close the Wagah Border and reserved the right to suspend all bilateral agreements with India, including the historic Simla Pact signed in 1972. Additionally, the committee expressed satisfaction over the operational preparedness of Pakistan’s armed forces.
While expressing sorrow over the loss of lives in the Pahalgam attack, Pakistan maintains that the accusations leveled by India are baseless and politically motivated.
The situation remains volatile, with both nuclear-armed neighbors taking hardened positions amid calls from international actors for restraint and dialogue.
