The Government of Pakistan has initiated the process of forming a national Artificial Intelligence (AI) advisory panel aimed at guiding the country’s digital transformation and fostering technology-driven economic growth.
The move came following a high-level meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday, during which progress on the promotion and responsible adoption of AI technologies was reviewed.
The Prime Minister said the government was determined to make information technology and artificial intelligence key enablers of economic progress, innovation, and efficiency in governance.
“Artificial intelligence will make the digital economy more effective and strengthen Pakistan’s capacity for innovation,” the premier said, stressing that the responsible and secure use of AI must remain central to all initiatives.
He also underscored the importance of data protection and sovereignty, noting that national systems must incorporate AI in ways that safeguard privacy and ensure transparency.
To streamline implementation, PM Shehbaz directed the creation of a steering committee to coordinate and monitor AI-related efforts across federal institutions and ensure alignment with the National Artificial Intelligence Policy.
Officials briefed the meeting on several government-led initiatives in AI development, research, and capacity building, highlighting ongoing collaborations with domestic and international technology partners.
The meeting was attended by Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Ahad Khan Cheema, Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecom Shaza Fatima, Minister of State for Finance and Railways Bilal Azhar Kayani, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Bilal Bin Saqib, and senior government officials and experts.
According to officials, the advisory panel will help Pakistan align with global AI standards, promote innovation, and attract foreign investment in emerging technologies. The initiative is part of the government’s broader vision to transform Pakistan into a digitally empowered economy capable of competing globally.
