Pakistan is moving closer to launching commercial next-generation wireless services as preparations continue for the upcoming 5G spectrum auction, a step expected to strengthen digital infrastructure and support technology-driven economic growth.
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) is scheduled to hold the opening ceremony of the Next Generation Mobile Services (NGMS)/5G spectrum auction on 10 March 2026 in Islamabad, marking an important milestone in the country’s telecom modernization strategy.
Officials said the auction will offer approximately 597 MHz of spectrum across low-, mid- and high-frequency bands, which are critical for enabling high-speed mobile broadband, industrial automation, and advanced communication applications.
Industry projections suggest that the auction may generate $300 million to over $700 million in revenue for the national treasury, depending on bidder participation, market competition, and final spectrum pricing.
The auction will be conducted through a multi-round electronic clock format, with primary spectrum blocks expected to be offered in the 2600 MHz and 3500 MHz bands, which are internationally recognized as core frequencies for 5G network deployment.
Government sources indicated that approximately 300 MHz of spectrum could generate around $300 million if bidding remains limited, while stronger competition may push earnings closer to the higher estimate.
To accelerate digital infrastructure expansion, authorities have reduced Right of Way (ROW) charges from Rs26,000 per kilometre to zero, a policy designed to promote fiber-optic network deployment and lower operational barriers for telecom operators.
Following successful auction completion, preliminary deployment of 5G services is expected within three to six months, subject to network installation progress and equipment availability.
Local telecom stakeholders have reportedly started preparing for 5G technology adoption, including equipment procurement and network modernization planning.
Pakistan’s cellular spectrum availability currently stands at about 274 MHz, which is considered relatively limited compared to the country’s rapidly growing subscriber base exceeding 240 million mobile users.
Officials believe spectrum expansion will help reduce network congestion, improve mobile broadband quality, and support future digital services such as Internet of Things (IoT) applications, smart healthcare solutions, and automated industrial systems.
The government plans phased expansion of high-speed connectivity coverage across major cities and gradually to other regions as part of long-term digital transformation goals.
