ISLAMABAD: Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah inaugurated the newly renovated National Stadium in Karachi today, marking a significant milestone in Pakistan’s preparations for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
The ceremony was attended by Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, Federal Minister Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, and other dignitaries.
The National Stadium, also known as the National Bank Cricket Arena, underwent extensive renovations to meet international standards ahead of the much-anticipated tournament. The refurbishment included modernized facilities, upgraded seating, and enhanced player amenities. The renovation work commenced on September 28 and was completed by January 31, showcasing the dedication and efficiency of the workforce involved.
The grand opening featured musical performances by renowned artists Ali Zafar, Shafqat Amanat Ali, and Sahir Ali Bagga, culminating in a spectacular fireworks and light show that captivated attendees. Entry to the event was free for spectators upon presenting their ID cards, encouraging widespread community participation.
This inauguration comes shortly after the unveiling of Lahore’s revamped Gaddafi Stadium on February 7, 2025, underscoring Pakistan’s commitment to providing world-class venues for the Champions Trophy. The National Stadium is set to host the tournament’s opening match between Pakistan and New Zealand on February 19. Notably, due to political considerations, the high-profile match between Pakistan and India will be played under a ‘fusion model’ in Dubai on February 23.
The ICC Champions Trophy 2025, scheduled from February 19 to March 9, will feature eight of the world’s top cricketing nations competing in a 50-over format. This tournament marks Pakistan’s first major global cricket event since the 1996 ODI World Cup, highlighting the nation’s re-emergence as a premier destination for international cricket.
PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi expressed gratitude to all those involved in the swift completion of the stadium’s renovation, emphasizing the collaborative effort that made this achievement possible. He also acknowledged the laborers’ dedication, noting that many had not returned home for months to ensure the project’s timely completion.
As Pakistan prepares to host the Champions Trophy, the successful renovation and inauguration of the National Stadium stand as a testament to the country’s commitment to promoting cricket and enhancing its infrastructure to international standards.
