The government has intensified oversight of Pakistan’s energy sector and activated daily crisis monitoring, assuring there is no fuel shortage despite mounting risks around key Gulf shipping routes.
A high-level committee constituted by the Prime Minister to monitor petrol prices in the wake of the evolving regional situation met at the Finance Division under the chairmanship of Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb.
The committee carried out a comprehensive review of petroleum stocks, global price trends, and supply chain vulnerabilities amid rising geopolitical uncertainty. Officials informed the meeting that national stocks of petroleum products remain at comfortable levels and the domestic supply chain is fully functional.
Participants examined forward and futures market trends, freight and insurance costs, and alternate sourcing strategies to prepare for potential disruptions. The possible foreign exchange and fiscal implications of sustained oil price volatility were also assessed.
The meeting noted that any prolonged disruption in the Strait of Hormuz or escalating tensions around the Bab el-Mandeb Strait could pose serious risks to global energy flows. However, the finance minister stressed that there is no immediate supply stress and maintaining market confidence is critical.
The committee reviewed LNG and LPG supply positions, shipment schedules, terminal operations, and line-pack management to ensure operational readiness. Ministries were directed to enhance coordination, validate physical stock data, and closely track cargo movements.
It was decided that the committee will meet daily to consolidate data and conduct structured reviews, enabling real-time monitoring of international oil prices, domestic stock levels, foreign exchange exposure, and shipping dynamics.
The finance minister emphasized that any pricing adjustments necessitated by global market movements would be handled through established and transparent mechanisms to avoid abrupt distortions.
The meeting was attended by Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik, Power Minister Sardar Awais Ahmad Leghari, and Minister of State for Finance Bilal Azhar Kayani, along with senior officials from relevant ministries and regulatory bodies.
Concluding the meeting, the finance minister reiterated that the government is closely monitoring developments at the highest level and that comprehensive contingency planning is in place to safeguard Pakistan’s energy security.
