ISLAMABAD: In the wake of the deadly Jaffar Express hijacking that claimed at least 31 lives, the government has decided to convene an in-camera meeting of a parliamentary panel on national security to discuss the escalating threat of terrorism in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq to hold the crucial security meeting at Parliament House on Tuesday at 1:30 pm. The session will be attended by members of the Standing Committees on Defence and Foreign Affairs, federal cabinet members, chief ministers of all four provinces, and parliamentary party leaders or their representatives.
According to official sources, military leadership will brief the participants on the prevailing security situation in Balochistan and KP. Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Gen Syed Asim Munir is also expected to attend the briefing.
Meanwhile, the government is reportedly considering launching a large-scale operation against the banned Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and other militant groups responsible for recent terror attacks in the region. While details of the operation remain undisclosed, a senior government official hinted at decisive action against terrorist elements.
Furthermore, Rana Ahsan Afzal, a key aide to the prime minister, announced that a Multi-Party Conference (MPC) would soon be convened to engage all political forces and stakeholders in discussions on national security. He underscored the government’s commitment to tackling terrorism and restoring stability in the affected regions.
The move comes amid growing concerns over the resurgence of terrorist activities in the country, particularly in Balochistan and KP, where security forces have been engaged in counter-terrorism operations.
